Thursday Feb. 14 – Valentine’s Day Composting!

We went out at 6:30 am to turn some compost for Hands on Nashville’s Urban Farm Program!

These trees will all bear fruit one day, they are treated with compost annually, instead of being treated with nitrogen powder like in most conventional agricultural farms.

Just relaxing where many visitors to this free farm will visit years to come!

Carlson presenting the worm depository to us. Worms are the best thing for farming and composting! They crawl around and leave their tunnels everywhere for oxygen to treat the microorganisms in the compost. They also leave behind excrement that is further used to nutritional benefit. — Did you know, a small bag full of worm doo-doo is worth upwards of $20?!!

Rows of vegetation at the farm.

The big piles of compost get up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit within! The whole pile is considered living because of the high volume of working bacteria inside of it.

Thursday Feb 14 – Home Energy Savings House Project for Ms. Greer!

At 8:30 am we helped Jaclyn and Mito improve the efficiency of the home of a lady. Her utilities will now cost her less money each month! This is part of a great ongoing project by Hand’s on Nashville’s Home Energy Savings Program!

Mito installing the door blower. This makes the pressure of the interior 50 pascals less than that of the exterior. This way we could walk around the house feeling the windows, light fixtures, and other things for air leaks! Afterward we patched these up to make the house even more air tight!

A closer look at the meter that measured the differences in pressure and the rated air flow of the house.
